Walter Howard Smart, a retired veteran of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force, a resident of Thatcher, entered into rest Monday morning, June 14, 2021, at the Arizona State Veteran Home, in Tucson, following a lengthy illness. Walter was 89.
Walter served our nation during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Walter is survived by: his children, Rhonda Ruiz (John), of Thatcher, Melvin Smart, of Tucson, Michael Smart, of Salem, Oregon; a brother, Oliver Gene "Pete" Smart, of Carlsbad, New Mexico. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Walter was predeceased by: his wife, Marlene Dedrick Smart; a son, Paul Allen Smart; and a daughter, Debra Jean Smart.
A Celebration of Walter's Life will be conducted Thursday morning, July 8, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple View Chapel in Central by Bishop Eric Haller of the Thatcher Fifth Ward.
Walter will be laid to rest at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas Friday morning, July 9, 2021, with military honors conferred by the Fort Bliss Select Honor Detail.
