Gracie Booth Leavitt

Gracie Booth Leavitt, a longtime resident of Central, entered into eternal life Monday evening, August 6, 2018 at her residence with her family at her bedside. Gracie was 86. Born in Safford, Arizona on March 3, 1932, to Frank and Itha Booth, Gracie was raised in and graduated from high school there. She moved to Pasadena, California and acquired a medical technology degree and was a lab tech for many years in the San Jose area. At age 49, she decided to return to Safford, working at the local hospital until her retirement. In that same time period she met Bert Leavitt and they were married in the Oakland Temple in August of 1981. After serving a mission together in Arkansas, Bert and Gracie returned home to Central, the place of her family heritage. Gracie was known as the Goat Lady in the Gila Valley – many babies thrived on her goat’s milk. She was a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings. Gracie was beloved by all who know her. She was caring and believed in every person’s worth and potential. Gracie survived: her parents; husband Bert; two sons-in-law, Toshi Fujimoto and Dennis Jensen; great-granddaughter, Savanna Fujimoto; and is now survived by: daughters, Moneta Leavitt and Murial Fujimoto; and son, Joseph Leavitt; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Gracie will be conducted Saturday morning, August 18, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., at the Pima L.D.S. Stake Center by Brother Layne Jensen. Concluding services will follow in the Central Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening, August 17, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the Vining Funeral Home and Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m., at the Pima L.D.S. Stake Center Relief Society Room.

I had the joy of getting to know Gracie when she worked in the lab at Mt Graham Regional Medical Center in Safford. We had some great visits and who was which branch of our family tree. Sure missed her when she retired. Our thoughts of comfort for her family.

I first met Gracie when we both lived in San Jose, CA, She was always at our Young Woman's camps. Camp Peaceful Pines. We had two different groups, each a week long,,Saturday to Saturday. She was our Medical Advisor, but did so much more. Everyone loved her. One visit not long ago was when June came down from California. The three of us had such fun remembering about those good old days in Young Womans. We have kept in touch through e-mail. Such a great friend. Always that beautiful smile!

Bob and I are deeply saddened at Gracie's passing, and want her family to know how much we loved her. She was the second person I met in Central, and she had it all:sense of humor, compassion, and a lot of knowledge. The thing that Bob and I have always marveled about her was her internal instinct to show up exactly when you needed her. It happened many times to me as I was caring for two of Central's finest. And Bob says she was his lifesaver when Carol was sick. There'll never be another Gracie!
